Global Leader Award Celebration

The Royal Alexandra and Albert School celebrated the first group of students to complete its bespoke and unique leadership programme, the Global Leader Award.

The Global Leader Award (GLA) was introduced in May 2018, and the first group of School’s Sixth Form students to complete the programme received their awards at a special occasion with local dignitaries.

To celebrate their success and hard work, on Friday 10th January, students who took part in the programme were invited to attend a celebration dinner in Gatton Hall, the School’s Grade II listed stately home.

The dinner was attended by Mr Bill Biddell, Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey, and Mrs Bridget Biddell, High Sheriff of Surrey. Mr Biddell gave an inspirational speech about leadership, resilience and the importance of character. Mr and Mrs Biddell were joined by the Headmaster, Mark Dixon, who gave the evening’s congratulatory speech to students.

The Global Leader Award has proven to be a popular and successful programme, with students embracing the challenges that aim to make them well-rounded global citizens. In its first year, 87% of students in Year 13 successfully completed the programme, and 26 students received the top Platinum award, which required students to contribute at least an additional 210 hours of activities on top of their A Level work.

Special congratulations were given to Cameron, who achieved the highest score for the cohort, and Ines, who received the highest score for a full boarder at the school.

The programme was introduced to equip students with the skills they need to achieve their goals in life and was designed to prepare Sixth Form students for the adult world. It focuses on leadership, careers and university, academic enrichment and global citizenship.

Students undertaking the programme receive credits for the activities they complete, such as mentoring another pupil, attending a careers interview, being a member of a society, and volunteering in the community. Their credits are then translated into an award level, from Bronze to Platinum.

Mr Jo Czerpak, Deputy Head in charge of Co-Curriculum and Community, said “The Global Leader Award is a bespoke leadership programme that is unique to the Sixth Form of the Royal Alexandra and Albert School. In its first year, it has exceeded expectations with a high level of participation and achievement.  Students have seized the opportunities on offer within the Global Leader Award and, by doing so, have developed a broad set of skills alongside their academic qualifications.”
