Surrey Mountain Bike Success

There is only one thing harder than winning a county competition and that is retaining it. But that’s just what six pupils from the Royal Alexandra and Albert School did on Tuesday 22nd May at the Surrey School Games in High Ashurst. This year the Mountain Biking competition included ten more schools competing than last year so the Year 8 pupils had to work even harder to retain their title.

During the morning coaches from British Cycling coached all the competitors on various cycling skills and the competition took place in the afternoon. There was a timed up-hill run, a timed down-hill run, a circular relay event with a route through trees and then a mass start for boys and girls.

Within the team there was a consistent approach with very good times for the up-hill and down-hill runs. The team relay saw the team third and in the mass starts they were first on points overall. Stand out performances were; Lucy (1st), Esther (2nd) and Miriam (5th) while the boys were Joe (4th), Nathan (6th) and James (8th). After all the results were in, the team from the Royal Alexandra and Albert School once again stood victorious on the top step of the medal dais.

Teacher Ian Rowe said “This was an amazing achievement for the team. They faced tough competition and some demanding events but their consistent effort has been rewarded with a win. Congratulations to the whole team.”
