May - Cycling winners meet Lord Coe

The Year 7 mountain bike team from the Royal Alexandra and Albert School today met Lord Coe when he visited Box Hill which will be the venue for one of the Olympic cycling events in 2012.

The youngsters had been selected to meet Lord Coe because, a few weeks earlier on Tuesday 3rd May, they had won the British Cycling/Surrey Schools mountain bike competition. This involved the team of three boys and three girls in a number of events including an uphill challenge, downhill challenge, team relay and mass-start events. The team’s scores were aggregated and medals awarded at the end of the day. They beat seven other schools to take the gold medals.

Teacher, Ian Rowe, commented “The team did really well in the mountain bike competition and were delighted when they won the gold medal. Meeting Lord Coe made their achievement even more special. At Box Hill today, Lord Coe spent some time talking to the children and showed a real interest in cycling.”

The team included: James Collins, Miriam Foreman, Nathan Little, Joe Pawson, Esther Rowe and Jessica Twornicki. Aged 11-12
