2008 was the 250th anniversary of
a meeting of the School's Founders that took place
in the George Tavern in Ironmonger Lane, London.
At this meeting it was agreed that enough money
had been raised to start the Orphan Working School.
Reverend Edward Pickard, who was the driving force
behind the project, set about the establishment
of the school and the first children were admitted
in March 1760. This school eventually became the
Royal Alexandra School and in 1949 it merged with
the Royal Albert School and moved to Gatton Park
in Reigate as the Royal Alexandra and Albert School
In May 2008 there was a series of
events to commemorate the 250th anniversary of
the foundation of the School. The first event
was a service for all senior pupils on Friday
9th May. This was followed by the Junior Prize
Giving Service on 10th May with the Bishop of
Southwark, Dr Thomas Butler as visiting speaker.
The weekend was concluded on Sunday 11th May with
the Senior Prize Giving Service attended by the
Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams.
